Waste Minimization

In a waste analysis conducted during Earth Week 2013, we found that over 90% of the trash in two Storzer Gym garbage containers was recyclable.
To learn about federal and state regulations related to waste management, check out the EPA and WI-DNR sites related to waste management and reduction.

Ripon College is one of the ten top campuses in the US recycling personal care containers (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc.)  Student members of the Environmental Group of Ripon (EGOR), collect these containers in each of the residence hall bathrooms. The contents are periodically collected, boxed, and mailed to TerraCycle. TerraCycle uses these products and others it collects to make new items.  In exchange, EGOR receives credit points they have used to support development projects in underserved communities in this country and abroad.

Look for TerraCycle bins in the bathrooms or at the end of your hall. In The Quads, the collection boxes are near the trash and recycling bins.
Have you seen this poster around campus and wondered what it means?  Both recyclables and solid waste destined to the landfill in Berlin are collected by Waste Management at Ripon College.  Conveniently, recyclables can be commingled, or mixed together, in one recycling container.  Single-stream recycling means all recyclable materials pictured above (and in the posters above recycling containers on campus) can have empty plastic, glass, metal and paper placed in them!
In Spring 2013 we sorted trash from Storzer Gym and found that nearly 90% of the "trash" was actually recyclable.
Recycling is better for our environment, because it keeps reusable items out of landfills where they are lost forever. Recycling  allows reusable items to be sold on the commodities market, contributing to our state's economy.
Recycled materials don't decay then release climate changing greenhouse gases.
Recycling is 60% cheaper for the college collecting and disposing waste headed to the landfill!
Now that you know, don't throw.
To see how all the Single-Stream recyclables get sorted, look at the video below from Waste Management's sorting facility in Germantown, WI.

The information above can be found in a handout shared with incoming students and parents during Summer Orientation.
